The Joe Sullivan Big Band‘s latest CD, entitled Northern Ontario Suite (Perry Lake Records) contains a collection of six songs inspired by Sullivan’s franco-ontarian roots in the northern town of Timmins, Ontario. These songs explore a range of moods and impressions, both from nature, as in the atmospheric Ionosphere, which depicts the northern lights and from northern culture as in The May Run Boogaloo, which refers to the time in May when northerners return to the woods to celebrate the arrival of summer with a few drinks . Releasing an album of big band music has been a dream of Joe Sullivan for a very long time. 18 excellent musicians have collaborated at this album. Compositions by Joe Sullivan and Jean Fréchette are moderns and intenses.
That partly explains how and why he came to lead such a superb jazz orchestra. In 2010, the Joe Sullivan Big Band's third album was released on the Effendi record label. In addition to the six-movement Northern Ontario Suite, its playlist includes "Plus Ca Change," "Later Joe," and "Mambo While Sullivan and company were certainly not the first to use this title, the apparent sequel to Perez Prado's "Mambo is a worthy salute to the Cuban bandleader and his internationally acclaimed Caribbean dance music.
Sullivan is a modern big band composer, arranger in the best sense of the phrase, writing music that is at ease in the twenty- first century as it carries on the time-honored jazz traditions of creative improvisation and emphatic swing. Although the term "suite" is generally used to denote a series of reciprocal motifs, Sullivan's essays, even though conceived as interconnected parts, can easily stand alone as discrete compositions. In either case it is the music that is decisive, and Sullivan's themes are as a rule sharp and engaging.
Big Band is a 1997 album by jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson, the fourth of the five albums he recorded with Verve Records during the end of his career. All tracks are composed by Joe Henderson, except where noted. Without a Song" (Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, Edward Eliscu) – 5:24. Black Narcissus" – 6:53. A Shade Of Jade" – 8:22. Step Lightly" – 7:19. Chelsea Bridge" (Billy Strayhorn) – 4:30. Recordame (Recuerdame)" – 7:25.

The Joe Sullivan Big Band is one of Canada’s most important jazz groups, featuring an all-star cast of soloists including Rémi Bolduc, Jocelyn Couture and Al McLean. This fourth release from the band features a large and varied repertoire of contemporary jazz compositions by Sullivan. Call me nostalgic, but in a world that seems to admire novelty above all else, I still love big band jazz. I love all the same stuff I was attracted to right from the star. nergy, sound, time, groov. dgy trumpets and old bendy blue note. right, aggressive trombone. .well you get the picture
