Larry Coryell - At The Village Gate mp3 album

Larry Coryell at the Village Gate is a live album by jazz guitarist Larry Coryell that was recorded on January 21 and 22, 1971 at the Village Gate in New York City. It was released by Vanguard Records. This was the first album on which his wife Julie Coryell sang. The album included a cover version of a song by Jack Bruce with whom Coryell toured in 1968. Rolling Stone stated the album showed Coryell with a power-trio in rock form

The Village Gate has seen amazing talent on its stage over the years, so it’s no surprise to find Larry Coryell there as well, holding court and laying out a smoldering show featuring his power trio, a grouping style that was very in at the time, due to the success. The album was an instant success, and closely followed the path laid down by Jimi’s Band of Gypsys, featuring nearly slashing guitar work, while the infusions of Harry Wilkinson reminds me of both Buddy Miles and Mitch Mitchell, though it’s Mervin Bronson who manages to keep Coryell from simply playing himself off the planet.

Coryell was a member of Gary Burton's seminal fusion combo (presaging even Miles Davis' In a Silent Way) and he recorded a considerable amount of solo fusion as well. This 1971 live recording shows Coryell at his most rock-oriented, perhaps in honor of the then-recent passing of guitar god Jimi Hendrix. Live at the Village Gate finds Coryell and his bass-and-drums combo stretching out on five tunes (including a Jack Bruce cover), merging the brutal crunch of rock with the dexterity of jazz.

Only for completionists (0%). One could easily file this album between Hendrix and Guru Guru's UFO album on his shelves.

Larry Coryell at the Village Gate Between the first and last words of this working-trio album-"Welcome to the death of rock and roll" and "Bliss is manages to play a lot of guitar, much of which (unlike the singing) sounds like rock and roll: themes over a steady beat. Even as an improvisor he's more into modal flights and electronic extravaganzas than inventing melodies off the changes. So ignore the rhetoric and face the music
