Ewan Maccoll - The Definitive Collection mp3 album

Autumn Reflection Regret. Black and White: The Definitive Collection. Though he remains a legendary figure in folk music circles, Ewan McColl was probably known (where he was known at all) to the rest of the world as the composer of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which was recorded by both Roberta Flack and Elvis Presley, among many others.

James Henry Miller (25 January 1915 – 22 October 1989), better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was an English folk singer, songwriter, communist, labour activist, actor, poet, playwright and record producer. MacColl was born as James Henry Miller at 4 Andrew Street, in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire, to Scottish parents, William Miller and Betsy (née Henry), both socialists

Black and White: The Definitive Collection. But he was also a fine singer and interpreter of traditional English and Scots folk music; his musical and marital partnership with Peggy Seeger produced some haunting and beautiful recordings, many of which are difficult or impossible to find - hence the value of this generous 20-track collection.

There are national treasures and there are global treasures; Scotland's Ewan MacColl falls into the latter category. A staunch supporter of the arts, folklorist, playwright, and activist, MacColl has a body of work that is staggering in scope and detail, and The Definitive Collection is a fantastic starting point for those interested in his contributions to the English and Scottish folk revival. Beginning with "The Manchester Angel," that wonderfully rich baritone offers a soldier's desperate plea for one magical night with a beautiful, rightfully suspicious maiden

MacColl was a renaissance man of folk music, not as well known as Seeger or Guthrie, but in many ways just as important. This album is an antidote to all forms of fashionable 'arty' popular music (from Maccoll's original 'bete noir' Bob Dylan onwards). The poetry of & Knew She Was There' is almost like Auden. But Maccoll is most powerful for the ethical force of his songs, and the charismatic control of rhythm with which he performs them.
