Conductor: James Levine. Composer: Alban Berg, Anton Webern, Arnold Schoenberg. Audio CD (October 25, 1990). His half-dozen pieces are more intellectually stimulating than the Berg but often lack similar emotional involvement. Schoenberg's Five Pieces are early German Expressionist utilizing a large orchestra to create compact, even small scale, ideas. The performances, led by the young James Levine, are committed but not among the best, in my opinion. The Berlin Philharmonic plays well for Levine but the direction, while virile and direct, lacks the subtlety and nuance others bring to this music. In addition, Levine makes little or no effort to differentiate the three composers.

Alban Berg composed his Three Pieces for Orchestra (German – Drei Orchesterstücke), Op. 6, between 1913 and 1915. They are dedicated "to my teacher and friend Arnold Schoenberg in immeasurable gratitude and love". The three pieces are: Präludium (Prelude). An instrumentally colourful, impressionistic prelude.

Brilliant, but non-sensuous: that is many concertgoers’ opinion about the music of Arnold Schönberg and his pupils Alban Berg and Anton Webern. This concert, in which Simon Rattle presents orchestral pieces by the three composers, shows just how wrong they are: virtuoso music of overwhelming expressiveness. One important inspiration for Schönberg’s circle was Johannes Brahms, whose sun-drenched Second Symphony ends the concert. Berliner Philharmoniker. Sir Simon Rattle Conductor. The Webern, done here in its original version, can also be tauter, lingering less over fugitive details without losing structural cogency. Arnold Whittall, Gramophone Read less. Works on This Recording
