Uncle Dave Macon (October 7, 1870 – March 22, 1952), born David Harrison Macon-also known as "The Dixie Dewdrop"-was an American old-time banjo player, singer, songwriter, and comedian. Known for his chin whiskers, plug hat, gold teeth, and gates-ajar collar, he gained regional fame as a vaudeville performer in the early 1920s before becoming the first star of the Grand Ole Opry in the latter half of the decade. While Uncle Dave Macon recorded over 170 songs between 1924 and 1938, in his day he was most notable for his polished and lively stage presence. Go Long Mule - County Records (1972). Hold That Woodpile Down. Uncle Dave Macon & His Fruit Jar Drinkers. I'm Goin' Away in the Morn. The Fruit Jar Drinkers recorded for the first time on May 7, 1927. Although the group's repertoire mainly consisted of traditional songs and fiddle numbers, they would occasionally record sacred songs and when that occurred, Macon would temporarily alter the group's name to the Dixie Sacred Singers. In early 1927, Uncle Dave Macon formed the Fruit Jar Drinkers, consisting of Uncle Dave Macon, Sam McGee, Kirk McGee and Mazy Todd.

A wild romp through 18 tracks recorded during Uncle Dave Macon's heyday period of 1926 through 1934, Go Long Mule is uniformly strong if not exceptionally complete. These are some of the most vibrant examples of old-timey music likely to be found, with Macon charging through shouters like "I'm Goin' Away in the Morn" and "Sail Away Ladies," even literally stomping out the rhythms of "Way Down the Old Plank Road. Joined by the Fruit Jar Drinkers, the call and response of "Hold the Woodpile Down" and "Carve That Possum" are prime.
