The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is an American orchestra based in Detroit, Michigan. Its main performance center is Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Great music performed by a great orchestra. Paul Paray certainly deserves his reputation. The albums are hard and expensive to find. This music is probably the best recording of the Carmen and L'Arlesienne Suites by Georges Bizet because its conductor, who is part French understood its French background. George Bizet's Carmen was a far more popular opera than L'Arlesienne. On here, the Carmen Overture, Gyspy Song, Micaela's Aria, Habanera, Seguidilla and the Fate Theme are all stripped from any Italian influence of grand opera and is effectively played as French national music. The recording opens with what was an anthem-like musical composition La Patrie, a rare and obscure work by Bizet.

Paul Paray, the conductor who made the Detroit Symphony one of the finest ‘French’ orchestras on the planet’ (Gramophone) Suppé and Auber prove an ideal spirit-raiser. The Beautiful Galatea balances handsome playing with real swagger, and Poet & Peasant is intense and beautifully shaped. There are nine overtures, each parading similar virtues – brilliance, energy, a consistent rhythm and line, (and) felicitous phrasin. erlioz (is) the best music, and here the virtuosity of Paray’s orchestra really comes into its own. I do not ever remember having heard the climax of Le Carnaval Romain.
