Charlie Barnet (October 26, 1913 - September 4, 1991) was unusual in several ways. One of the few jazzmen to be born a millionaire, Barnet was a bit of a playboy throughout his life, ending up with a countless number of ex-wives and anecdotes. He was one of the few white big band leaders of the swing era to openly embrace the music of Duke Ellington (he also greatly admired Count Basie). Barnet was a pioneer in leading integrated bands (as early as 1935).
The second LP of Charlie Barnet broadcasts put out by the collector's label Joyce features two different versions of Barnet's big band. Side one is taken from 1945-46 and finds the group (which has similar personnel as their Decca recordings of the period) playing high-quality late-period swing with three commercial vocals by Phil Barton and Fran Warren. However it is the flip side that is of greatest interest for the Nov. 1947 Barnet Orchestra featured trumpeter Clark Terry (who takes the vocal on "Sidewalks of New York") and was open to the influence of bebop.
