Holy Thursday marks the end of Lent. On this day there are two celebrations: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The evening Mass is also called "Coena Domini" and marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, the three days in which the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus are commemorated. In St Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis will preside over the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Cross, and the Communion Rite, starting at 5pm. At . 5pm, he will participate in the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross, at the Colosseum, at the end of which he will give a reflection and impart his Apostolic Blessing. The Easter Vigil takes place on Saturday, April 20th, beginning at . 0pm.

Holy Week in Christianity is the week just before Easter. It is also the last week of Lent, in the West, – Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday (Spy Wednesday), Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), Good Friday (Holy Friday), and Holy Saturday – are all included. However, Easter Day, which begins the season of Eastertide, is not. However, traditions observing the Easter Triduum may overlap or displace part of Holy Week or Easter itself within that additional liturgical period.

During Holy Week, proceeding Easter, many Sicilian villages celebrate with costumed processions through the streets. Often accompanied by music on themes of the Passion, these popular parade ceremonies have roots in agrarian pre-Christian rites. The songs are mostly sung in distorted Latin, though some are in Italian, and feature a polyphonic structure and choral style with soloing. Some of the songs included on this album are derivations of ancient liturgical hymns, while others are lighter, more modern compositions.

Holy Week is the last week of Lent before Easter, and begins on Palm Sunday, and ends on Holy Saturday. In older nomenclature Holy Week is the second Sunday of Passiontide (Passiontide begins on the fifth Sunday of Lent). Holy Week is the section of the Church Year where Jesus' final moments are commemorated. This day celebrates the institution of the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Ordination. Also known as "Shear Thursday. Christians from all over the world would take pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and the Church of Jerusalem provided rites and worship dedicated to reenacting the final events of Christ's life.

The Vatican prefect of the Secretariat for Communication resigned in March, after displaying a private letter from Benedict XVI during the presentation of a book and blurring out paragraphs critical of the work. The month also brought Holy Week celebrations to Rome. On Palm Sunday, Pope Francis headed the procession recalling Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem before His Passion. The Holy Father celebrated the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday in the Roman prison Regina Coeli
